Tijuana Cartel play The Night Cat on 26 February with Future Roots, carrying new single Cactus Blossom into Fitzroy.
Flamenco guitar and a dancefloor rarely share a room, but Tijuana Cartel have spent years making the two get along.
Tijuana Cartel are taking that combination to The Night Cat in Fitzroy on 26 February 2027, with Future Roots also on the bill. The Australian outfit arrive with new single Cactus Blossom, a warm, sprawling slab of psychedelia that marks a fresh start for the group. For years their sound has hovered somewhere between a desert film score and a late-night club, and they’ve made that patch their own.

Live, the whole thing is built by hand as much as by machine. Flamenco guitar and live percussion sit on thick electronic grooves, with heavy bass underneath and rhythms borrowed from all over the globe folded in. The band write with the stage in mind, stacking knotty guitar lines and climbing melodies into songs meant to be heard in a room. Over the course of a set, things swing between hushed, almost filmic passages and long stretches made for dancing.
The Night Cat opened on Johnston Street in 1994, making it one of Fitzroy’s longest-running music venues. Its signature feature is the stage in the round, which drops the band into the middle of the crowd instead of parking them at one end. The venue also runs a weekly Latin night, Domingo Latino, so Latin rhythms are familiar sounds on that floor.
Anyone who’s caught Tijuana Cartel at a festival will have a fair idea of what’s coming, since the band have played festival stages and dancefloors around the country and overseas for years. Doors open at 7pm on the night and tickets start at $40.27 through Moshtix.
