Melbourne's beloved jazz venue marks a decade of world-class music with a 2026 celebration.
A basement off La Trobe Street has quietly become one of the most important jazz rooms in the country. Bird’s Basement, the intimate venue tucked away on Singer’s Lane, will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2026 with a full year of special performances and an official party on 3 March.
Since opening in March 2016, Bird’s Basement has hosted an impressive roll call of local and international talent. Names like Ravi Coltrane, Kurt Elling, John Scofield, Kate Ceberano, James Morrison, the late Renée Geyer and dozens more have graced the stage. The venue was founded by guitarist and artistic director Albare Dadon, who launched the space with the help of Coltrane himself.

The venue survived Melbourne’s lockdowns and emerged with a completely new look. Co-owner Mel Dadon led a full redesign, drawing on her time living in London to create a space inspired by Mayfair sophistication. The retro jazz room aesthetic gave way to navy velvet seating with silver stud detailing, black granite tables, intimate table lamps and glossy black finishes throughout.
The food offering also received a significant overhaul. The menu now blends Australian produce with Mediterranean and Asian influences, with options for vegan, gluten-free and low FODMAP diners. Dishes like the lamb ragu and Bird’s Burger have become venue staples.
While jazz remains the core focus, Bird’s Basement programmes across genres, with regular performances from artists like Richard Clapton consistently selling out. The venue also hosts private events, corporate functions and milestone celebrations.
The tenth anniversary celebrations will feature special performances from both local and international acts throughout 2026, with the full programme available on the venue’s website.
