Bingethinkers : Where Are They Now

Traditional boom bap with a modern electronic tweak

Too many acts never convert on their potential. They hit the scene with a splash, get quickly touted as “the next big thing”, then vanish into the ether when they realise most people making music in Australia still have day jobs. When an act vanishes (largely) from the scene, it is a pleasant surprise when 4 years down the track they re-emerge with a bang, in this case the aptly titled Where Are They Now.

From the largely underrated Look Up collective, the crew comprising emcee Rinse with producers Aeon, PSYKEone and everyone’s favourite dancing DJ 2Buck, the Bingethinkers have delivered the second album of 2011 to restore my faith in Australian hip hop. Rinse is a brilliant emcee, he can hold down a track start to end easily, but is just as comfortable aside guests, Swarmy, Dialectrix, Mantra & Newsense.3

The production is traditional boom bap with a modern electronic tweak, it’s the perfect adaptation of sound, a classic formula altered for modern tastes. The scratches start to end are also all on point. Standouts are The Bust & Aus Stylin, but no tracks here warrant wearing out the skip button.
