Piles of Lies is the title track from the fourth Batrider album, out this week. True to form, they bury the melody under the clang and toll of lo-fi guitar fuzz, and somewhere from that skewed imbalance an awesome little tune emerges – the best kind of would-be Velvet Underground sound. Sarah Chadwick bleats in a bittersweet way, her thick Kiwi accent straining around the simple, sing-song phrases about lies, shame and betrayal, at once both grrrly cute and utterly bleak.
