Members of Wellyn, Owls Of The Swamp and Subaudible Hum formed a minor Melbourne indie supergroup last year, then shipped out to play their debut shows overseas. They’ve returned and are ready to tour Australia with a new single under their belts, the crunchy, synth heavy Collapse. It’s an odd tune that is both sluggish and sharp, with fragmented, popping lines of melody and slumping bass notes. Wellyn singer Nedd Jones lends his distinctive voice to the mix, wailing with a gothic air above the chug of instruments, but he can’t quite bring it all together. I don’t love the song. It has a vaguely New Romantic flavour, but clearly strives to be more than a stylish retro pop homage. Whatever they’re trying to do, it isn’t quite working; it sounds dated.
