Believe it or not it’s still May and it’s still autumn on this side of the world. Except in the NGV that is, where the Winter Masterpieces exhibition hosts works from Van Gogh as well as live performances every Friday night until early July. The NGV Friday Night series is a whimsical weekly shindig that brings together art and musicians in the Great Hall after hours, and encourages the public to come along. Headlining this week is Gareth Liddiard from The Drones and enigmatic ensemble Elan Strings.

Until Sunday May 14, right across Melbourne, there is a ten dayart festival called Yirramboi. The festival takes its name from the word ‘tomorrow’ in the shared languages of the Boon Wurrung and Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, and is a celebration of the diversity and individuality of First Nation Artists. The festival is packed with quality events including Bad Apples Music, who are are driving around in a truck and playing four free concerts in the heart of the CBD on Saturday May 13. Bad Apple artists Briggs, Nooky, Philly and Birdz are taking over various locations throughout the city like Flagstaff Gardens, RMIT Basketball Courts and the Arts Centre Forecourt. There are also free one-on-one dance workshops as part of the festival in Campell Arcade with Amrite Hepi. The intimate sessions are aimed at exploring themes personal to the participant, and creating a dance based off you and your experiences. Head to Yirramboi’s website for the full listings.

Saturday May 13 at Federation Square, Free West Coast Swing Dance Party will combine the efforts of everyone who participated in the SwingCity dance classes over the last eight weeks. For two hours, Federation Square will be occupied by a sea of free movement and great tunes from instructors and students. Who doesn’t love a lil afternoon boogie?
