It’s time for the year’s first instalment of New Slang. The monthly all ages extravaganza is back and serving up tasty acts at The Channel all year. This Friday May 5 is the first batch and it’s a hot little party you’re not going to be able to sit down for. Headlined by the unmissable, unforgettable Bec Sandridge she’ll be joined by banger factories Huntly and Poppy. Bec has quite a reputation for selling out shows which might mean that you don’t have heaps of time to get yourself a cool lil’ ticket.
Talking about phresh new things, did you know that The Push are about to run a new term of school but just for hip hop? Yeah they are and it’s called Push It! Lab. It’s red-hot-crash-course in verse covering everything from business to history to technical skills. All successful applicants get to roll under the wings of mentors Defron and Sadiva as they wade through the subtly of words and flow of 808s in eight free workshops at The Push Recording Lab. On Saturday May 6 there’s a huge hip hop dancing party at Montanasa Studiosin Albion. Dubbed Space Jam Volume 4, and part of the Eden Festival; which is an autumn celebration blending street wear, live music and a homemade skate park into a day-long party. Space Jam Volume 4 is all about bringing the movers and shakers of the Melbourne dance community into one building and strengthening the bonds that make it a community. SpaceJam showcases dance crews who are 18 and under, invited from interstate and also locally, in a heated competition in front of dance authorities Pollo (Ready to Rock, Bronx, NY), Fongo (Team Cream, QLD) and Sean (Checkered Minds, Singapore) for cool cash prizes. There’s also a free-for-all event open for anyone who thinks they got what it takes to compete. Tickets includes entry into the Eden Festival at the exact same location. How convenient is that?
