Acclaimed new circus explores pre-war Berlin’s dark cabaret scene

Berlin Burlesque
Words by Staff Writer

Melbourne's about to cop its first taste of Lyttelton Circus Theatre Company's acclaimed show that's been smashing box offices across the ditch.

Berlin Burlesque: The Story of Hanussen is making its Aussie premiere at Gasworks Arts Park this autumn, fresh from a sold-out New Zealand tour that’s already dazzled more than 15,500 punters across 10 cities.

The immersive production blends theatre, circus and live music to tell the true story of Erik Jan Hanussen, a mysterious magician, clairvoyant and nightclub owner who rose to prominence during the turbulent pre-war years in Germany.

Hanussen’s journey through the electric cabaret culture of 1930s Berlin unfolds against the backdrop of political intrigue and the rise of fascism. The production doesn’t shy away from exploring how entertainment and politics became dangerously intertwined during this pivotal historical moment.

“A dazzling riot of a stage show,” raved Christchurch Press, while Theatreview praised the “brilliant ensemble acting and skilful circus acts” on display.

Nelson Mail called the production “big, warm, generous, and absolutely joyous.”

What sets Berlin Burlesque apart is its commitment to historical storytelling through a contemporary lens. The show navigates the complex history of pre-Nazi Germany while delivering high-energy entertainment that’s accessible to modern audiences.

The Lyttelton Circus Theatre Company has built their reputation on creating works that combine technical circus excellence with thoughtful narrative. Their arrival in Melbourne marks an exciting addition to our city’s already vibrant performing arts landscape.

The two-hour spectacle promises to be more than just entertainment – it’s a timely reminder of how art and performance can reflect and respond to political extremism, packaged in a format that celebrates human resilience and creativity.

For history buffs, circus enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a night of thought-provoking entertainment, this Australian premiere offers a rare opportunity to experience acclaimed international circus theatre without leaving Melbourne.
