Christmas in Melbourne will see festive spirit returns with music, markets, and magic.

Melbourne transforms into a festive wonderland every Christmas, offering families a variety of events, activities, and opportunities to embrace the holiday spirit. This year, the city’s beloved Salvation Army carolers and musicians return to the streets, ensuring Melbourne is alive with the sound of Christmas.

Salvation Army brings music to the streets

Premier Jacinta Allan, alongside Minister for Major Events Steve Dimopoulous, Minister for Small Business Natalie Suleyman, Lord Mayor Nick Reece, and Commanding Officer of the Salvation Army Major Brendan Nottle, announced the return of the Salvation Army’s iconic musicians. Starting Monday, 9 December, their performances will fill the CBD with festive cheer until Christmas Eve.

This initiative aims to spread joy while supporting vulnerable Victorians through donations to the Salvation Army. The band will perform across key city locations, including the City Loop train stations, featuring vocalists, violinists, guitarists, string quartets, and their renowned brass band.

Major Brendan Nottle expressed enthusiasm, saying, “We’re back! With support from the City of Melbourne, our bands will bring music to the city and create an opportunity for everyone to look out for each other.”

Family-friendly activities

The city’s festive offerings go beyond music, with events and decorations designed to delight families. Melbourne staples like the Myer Christmas Windows and the Christmas Eve Circus at Town Square return, alongside newer attractions like a festive-themed maze in the Docklands.

Families can also enjoy Koorie Krismas at Federation Square, featuring a First Peoples makers’ market and live performances. For a creative twist, the Melbourne City Christmas Treasure Hunt offers an interactive adventure with maps available at Mary Martin Bookshop.

Craft enthusiasts can join Christmas Crafternoons at the Library at The Dock, while shoppers can discover unique gifts at the Artist Christmas Market in East Melbourne, featuring artwork, pottery, candles, and more.

The festive season also coincides with Melbourne’s packed major events calendar. The Boxing Day Test, the Australian Open, and the Pro Kabaddi Melbourne Raid at John Cain Arena are just a few of the highlights. Additionally, the National Gallery of Victoria will host a world-first exhibition by Yayoi Kusama, featuring a dedicated kids’ gallery and the return of NGV Friday Nights.

Minister for Major Events Steve Dimopoulous highlighted Melbourne’s vibrant offerings, saying, “This is just the start of our golden mile of major events. Melbourne is the place to be this Christmas.”

A city alive with festive spirit

Melbourne’s Christmas celebrations embody the city’s vibrant culture and community spirit. Whether enjoying the Salvation Army’s carols, exploring markets, or attending major events, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Premier Jacinta Allan summed it up perfectly: “Melbourne comes alive over Christmas with music and events. It’s a great time to take the family in and enjoy everything on offer.”
