Released mid-2010, King Of The Beach consolidated Wavves’ resolve, stabilising as an outfit with a strangely affable penchant for weed (egads, a musician on marijuana?) and Fifa 2010 on PS3.
While Bug serves as a self-effacing self-reflection, the Life Sux EP as a whole serves as a toast to success. Lead single I Wanna Meet Dave Grohl charting the increasingly realistic aspirations of Wavves, transitioning the titular chorus into “I wanna be Dave Grohl.” It’s a weird, cyclical pseudo-sardonic ode – as if Wavves not only wants to be the Dave screaming “Hi Axl!” at the MTV Awards, but can envision a fantasy in which he is the frontman of a stadium-ruling rock band in two decades time. The song closes with the refrain lifted from King Of The Waves, reiterating that “You’re never gonna stop me, never gonna stop me.” I can’t help but think he’s right.
