Northlane chase a Rising rave into trance-metal on Anemoia

“Holding onto something borrowed/While we grieve what never was.”

The Dictionary Of Obscure Sorrows defines anemoia as “nostalgia for a time you’ve never known”.

Northlane songwriter and guitarist Jon Deiley went down a guitar-driven trance hole after UK DJ and producer Evian Christ’s life-changing set at Rising in 2024. So lead single Evian, a stop-start blast of supercharged Prodigy, isn’t about the posh water.

Stay up to date with what’s happening in and around Melbourne here.

Pierce The Sky opens on sounds that suck the air out of the room over bubbling synth. Then it lurches into NEED2FEEL, and the record takes off. Marcus Bridge sings “I need to feel your heartbeat, so come closer/It’s not over” so sweetly it’s impossible to resist, before the pit gets its reward: brutal beats, sinewy basslines and mind-melting fizz.

Deathwish throws you around like a human pinball and holds you at the crest of the rollercoaster before the drop: “I’m the centre of the universe/I don’t care what you believe.”

CUT_it, about burnout, sounds like an energy vacuum. When Bridge sings “I’ve got nothing else left in my body”, you believe him, body and mind.

S∈GA, with Japanese-French hyperpop artist MANON, sets cartoonish guest vocals against relentless drum’n’bass. On The Other Side, Nic Pettersen drums like a pro boxer nailing a complex punching drill.

The masters of electronic metal find their pocket here. Strap in.

Anemoia is out 30 October independently via Immortal Music Group.
