The production arrives with a heavyweight creative team. Two-time Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell, whose credits include Kinky Boots, Legally Blonde and Hairspray, takes on direction and choreography, while Grammy winners Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance supply an original score. That songwriting pair sit behind Summer of ’69 and Heaven, and the book comes from the film’s director Garry Marshall with screenwriter J.F. Lawton, keeping the stage retelling close to its source.
On stage, the show leans into the moments that made the film a favourite, from the Rodeo Drive shopping sprees to the opera and the transformation at its centre, wrapped in a design delivered by a team drawn from music, Hollywood and Broadway. The Melbourne run follows seasons on the West End, Broadway and elsewhere in Australia, with each performance lasting roughly two and a half hours, including a 20-minute interval.
Midweek audiences catch a break on price, with every seat going for $99 at Wednesday evening shows. Parties of eight or more can access group rates, and tickets are on sale through Ticketek, the authorised seller for the Regent Theatre, whose box office sits at 191 Collins Street in the city.
