A new dance festival is launching in Melbourne this November, following in the footsteps of Stereosonic.
The co-founder of huge Melbourne music festival, Stereosonic, returns with Hypersonic. The new event will bring electronic music to two Australian cities this November.
Hypersonic, run by Symbiotic, one of Australia’s leading specialist trance event companies, promises to deliver a ground-breaking multi-genre festival experience across Sydney and Melbourne on successive days.
The fresh electronic dance festival will stage shows at Sydney Showground and Melbourne Showgrounds. While the talent lineup remains under wraps, organisers have begun revealing details about the ambitious new venture.

Hypersonic represents a significant return to the Australian, and Melbourne, festival circuit. The event has connections to Stereosonic, which previously dominated the electronic music landscape before its conclusion in 2016.
Stereosonic began life in Melbourne in 2007, as EDM exploded, and expanded to a five-city adventure, visiting Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. The festival expanded to a two-date format and, for its 2013 run, sold more than 280,000 tickets sold across its five shows.
That year, SFX announced it had bought Totem OneLove Group Pty Ltd for US$75 million, and two years down the track, Stereosonic had reverted to a single-day format. In April 2016, organisers said the event would take a “hiatus.” But it hasn’t been heard of since.
Beat Mag looked back on the festival that is no more, with one writer reflecting on their experience.
“Considering it was my first over-18s festival, it was pretty intimidating walking in surrounded by heaps of hectic muzzas that had obviously been there for numerous years. But as soon as I got to the first stage to see PNAU, all of my concerns instantly faded away. The day continued seeing acts that I’m now not so proud of saying I prioritised over others, namely seeing LMFAO and Afrojack instead of acts like Claude VonStroke and Mr Oizo.
The night finished with Armin Van Buuren (I think) and the light show was sick. All in all, the two years I went to Stezza were great. I just wish I had the music taste I have now because I missed out on some great acts, but hindsight is a beautiful thing.” – Blake
Hypersonic will showcase multiple electronic music genres. Details about specific artists and performances remain scarce, but organisers promise announcements in coming weeks.
The November timing positions Hypersonic perfectly for summer festival season. Australian dance music fans will have a new major event to anticipate. The festival aims to capture the energy and excitement that made Stereosonic so beloved.
Organisers have remained tight-lipped about specific artists and ticket details, keep an eye out Melbourne.
