Formula 1 fans heading to Albert Park this weekend can ditch their cars for free tram services.

With crowds exceeding 470,000 expected to attend the Australian Grand Prix, public transport will be the fastest route to the track. Dedicated express trams will run every two minutes from key city locations, giving racegoers the smoothest journey to the circuit throughout the four-day event.

Tram services will operate extensively from early morning until late evening, with free travel for all Grand Prix ticket holders between the CBD and Albert Park.

Trams will run from 5:30am to 10:00pm each day of the event, with Southern Cross Station services delivering fans to Gates 1, 2 and 3. Those boarding at Flinders Street Station and Melbourne Central will arrive at Gates 5, 8, 9 and 10. Transport authorities recommend spreading out your entry points, with the longest queues anticipated at Southern Cross and Gates 1 and 2.

For those unable to catch trams, supplementary buses will operate from Friday through Sunday between Crown Casino and Gates 1, 2 and 3. Regular bus routes including 246, 600, 604, 606, 922, and 923 will also service the event area.

Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams emphasized the importance of the enhanced transport options: “We’re helping rev up Victorians and international visitors for this year’s Grand Prix with more than 4,800 extra tram services to put fans in pole position to watch the race.”

Liz Reddy, Yarra Trams Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the system’s proven capacity: “In 2024, trams got over 400,000 passengers to and from the action at Albert Park – we’re proud to be supporting this massive event and getting racegoers to Albert Park for the first race of the 2025 Formula 1 season.”

Race fans should note significant road closures in the area, including Lakeside Drive and all roads within Albert Park. Temporary closures will also affect Spencer Street, Bourke Street and St Kilda Road at various times to ensure pedestrian safety and maintain tram operations.

For those using rideshare or taxi services, designated drop-off and pick-up points will be available on Canterbury Road, Albert Road, St Kilda Road and Fitzroy Street.

Australian Grand Prix Corporation Chief Events Officer Tom Mottram advised: “We recommend fans plan their journey to and from the Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit in advance, including checking which gate is best for your ticket type.”

Attendees are encouraged to use the PTV Journey Planner at ptv.vic.gov.au to organize their travel efficiently.
