A raw meditation on the My Favourite Things melody, imbued with grimey wubs, Ms Lauryn Hill is flawless in her delivery of poetics on Black Rage, a home recording released in the wake of the ugly injustice currently prevailing in Ferguson, MO. The prophet Yeezus once proclaimed “Lauryn Hill said her heart was in Zion / I wish her heart was still in rhymin’”. Maybe the world isn’t worthy of more rhymes from Ms Hill. Maybe one day. But for now, we’ll take what we can get. I saw her perform in Toronto the other week. It felt vital, as ever.
