The second single from Making Mirrors is a Motown funk track with grandiose brass flourishes and a crisp vocal performance. If all you know of Wally De Backer is Somebody That I Used to Know, this is a good indication of how variable his music can be – and how he can go from hip to hokey in the blink of an eye. His dexterity is amazing, don’t get me wrong, but I Feel Better is an unmistakably young, white, middle class take on a soulful, black genre – there’s no sex or subtlety in Gotye’s Motown. I don’t want to overstate this, because he’s such a gifted musician, but I don’t think this song works on an emotional level.
