60 Seconds With… Mushroom Giant

mushroomgiant2011.jpg

Mushroom Giant is the band’s name and I’m Craig, the bassist.

What do you reckon people will say you sound like ?

We’ve been around for about ten years now, and I guess the sound has changed as we’ve changed as people. Being instrumental though tends to mean we avoid getting lumped in with someone’s necessity to pigeon-hole us. But we reckon we sound like our older stuff, only newer… and better? Hopefully we’ve improved after all these years.

What do you love about making music?

I love those sessions with the lads where the ideas are bursting out thick and fast, and new songs get born. And of course the moment of truth when we perform it for the first time.

What do you hate about the music industry?

Hate is a strong word, and I love music so I’m struggling with this one. I guess I hate being stuck in an office somewhere with really bad radio. Light FM for instance. Ugh!

If you could travel back in time and show one of your musical heroes your stuff, who would it be and why?

Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, because he gave me the idea to use a cello bow on my bass, and Led Zeppelin really inspired all four of us.

What can a punter expect from your live show?

Visuals. We make little films for each of our songs. And awesome support bands. Probably the best thing about playing in the Melbourne music scene is sharing the stage with such great local bands.

What’ve you got to sell CD-wise?

Antarctic Angel is our most recent release, after our Kuru album (2008) and our first album, Rails.

When’s the gig and with who?

This Friday night, October 14 at The Evelyn Hotel with Ennis Tola, Geamala and Lunaire.

Anything else to add?

Anything? Okay. Victoria has one of the worst cases of genocide in the world. The Gulidjan people of Corangamite area of western Victoria were wiped out by 1860. Pretty fucked huh.
