5 stunning new Melbourne art exhibitions to see in February

Melbourne galleries are throwing their doors open for an amazing array of Melbourne art exhibitions this month, so we've compiled some of the best.

There’s almost no question that Melbourne’s got some of the best artists in all creative fields, especially the fine arts, and some glorious international artists are showing this month as well in a whole range of Melbourne art exhibitions. There’s some amazing flower shows, AI exhibits, and some great photographic exhibits.

Today we’re looking through the latter, taking a journey through Melbourne’s galleries to see what’s out there this month.

Future U

This show isn’t for the faint of heart. Future U traverses the life of humans in this crazy digital age, there’s some weird and wonderful things on display at this exhibition.

There’s displays, pieces and artworks of Artificial Intelligence, robotics and different types of biotechnology. Featured workers include Bettina von Arnim, Holly Block, Karen Casey, Duckworth Hullick Duo, Peter Ellis, Jake Elwes, Alexi Freeman, Libby Heaney, Leah Heiss and Emma Luke, Pia Interlandi, Amy Karle, Mario Klingemann, Zhuying Li, Christian Mio Loclair, Maina-Miriam Munsky, Patricia Piccinini, Stelarc, Uncanny Valley and Deborah Wargon.

It’s happening until February 26 at the RMIT Gallery on Swanston St, it’s free entry.

Fleur de Villes Flower Show

If you’ve ever seen images of flower shows from locations all around the world, the Fleur de Villes Flower Show is Melbourne’s very own version of that.

It’s a display of great installations and work from a number of Melbourne’s greatest florists, each coming from a number of different backgrounds and bringing a distinct flavour to the show. It’s also set to do good in the world, the show supporting the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

The flower show is taking place at Emporium Melbourne from February 18 – February 27, and its free entry.

Sidney Nolan: Search for Paradise at Heide MoMA

Sidney Nolan is one of Australia’s most prolific and well respected artists, and this exhibition will display some of his greatest works. Sidney Nolan is most well-known for his art pieces of Ned Kelly, but this show will celebrate his relationship and connection to the Heide Museum of Modern Art.

The exhibition is taking place at the Heide Museum of Modern art in Bulleen from February 19 until June 12. Prices are around $20, check out more info here.

Miss First Nations

Melbourne’s Midsumma Festival celebrates the best of queer culture, and this includes some great artwork and exhibits.

The walls of Scott Alley will be transformed into a stunning display of photos from the Miss First Nations event back in 2021. There were a number of amazing photos captured of stars like Lady Gargles, Estelle, Cerulean (the 2021 winner), Karma Bites, Stone Motherless Cold and Peaches.

It’s happening at Scott Alley near the State Library until February 28, and it’s free.

Bark Ladies: Eleven Artists from Yirrkala

Some of Australia’s most amazing work comes from Aboriginal and First Nations performers, and this exhibit celebrates that. Bark Ladies brings work from female Yolngu artists who work out of the Buku Larrngay Mulka Centre, which can be found in Northeast Arnhem Land, which is around 700km away from Darwin.

The work of these amazing performers has been appreciated by a variety of people across the world and is some of the most original stuff you’ll see at any gallery across Australia.

It’s taking place at the National Gallery of Victoria until April 25, and it doesn’t cost anything to attend. Find out more info here.
