Live at City Hall: Sunday Sounds is back, and this April it's bringing one of Melbourne's most beloved blues institutions, Checkerboard Lounge, to the stage.
Checkerboard Lounge has been a cult fixture on the Melbourne music scene for over 35 years. Built from the ground up by singer, songwriter and drummer Carl Pannuzzo, the band has cycled through an impressive cast of musicians over its lifetime and right now, it’s arguably never sounded better.
The current lineup is a genuine supergroup: Shannon Bourne on guitar, Tim Neal on Hammond, and Zoë Frater on bass, bringing serious firepower to a sound rooted in blues, soul and roots originals.

What makes Checkerboard Lounge so compelling is the unpredictability. No two shows are the same, and the band’s improvisational approach means things can go anywhere at any time.
There’s an almost telepathic communication between band members, a natural, intuitive sense of play that pulls the audience right into the journey. From standing ovations at festivals to packed inner-Melbourne pubs, this band has earned its reputation the hard way, night after night.
Supporting the afternoon is Melbourne-based roots rocker Joshua Batten, with DJ Helen Jennings OAM also spinning across the event.
Best of all? It’s completely free.
Live at City Hall: Sunday Sounds is a family-friendly series run in partnership with PBS 106.7FM, with free kids’ activities and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Kingston City Hall is fully licensed, with chips and chocolate available on the day.
The bar opens from 1pm, and you’re welcome to bring your own platter. Just keep it cold, as there are no reheating facilities on site.
