Your favourite Glastonbury fixture is back with another Australian pilgrimage

Words by staff writer

Essex folk troubadour Beans on Toast returns to Melbourne for his annual summer visit.

There’s something deeply comforting about a musician who releases an album every year on their birthday. British folk songwriter Beans on Toast (real name Jay McAllister) has done exactly that since 2009, dropping 16 records while simultaneously becoming one of the most beloved fixtures on the UK festival circuit.

Beans on Toast has performed at Glastonbury every year since 2007, earning cult status with his DIY approach to folk music that blends political protest songs with love ballads and pub-ready singalongs.

The Essex-born artist has carved out a reputation for breaking down barriers between performer and audience. His self-deprecating charm and no-holds-barred honesty have won him a devoted following who appreciate his simple songs about big ideas. When he’s not headlining festivals, he’s touring constantly across Europe, America and Australia, playing everything from tiny venues to stadiums (he performed to over 100,000 people in one week while opening for Frank Turner’s UK arena tour in 2014).

Beans on Toast has a genuine love affair with Australia, a sentiment captured in his song Your Old Mate Beano. After supporting Australian folk legend William Crighton, he fell hard for the country and has made it a regular stop on his annual touring circuit. His music celebrates the human spirit with warmth, wit and an unshakeable sense of hope, whether he’s tackling environmental issues, singing about his wife Lizzy, or toasting the simple joy of a night at the pub. Expect stories, laughs and plenty of crowd participation at Brunswick Ballroom.
