For four decades, William Basinski (US) has been exploring the notions of reverberant memory and echoing time through sound. His music calls on obsolete technologies and analogue tape loops to create intensely evocative, and at times haunting, atmospheres.
His landmark work, The Disintegration Loops, is widely recognised as one of this century’s most important and vibrant representation of ambient music. Diving ever deeper into his archive of recordings, most recently for the new edition September 23rd, Basinski’s recent albums each call forth the memory echoes of faded times and places.
Joining Basinski is Hong Kong based composer and musician Olivier Cong. His 2024 album, Tropical Church, was widely acclaimed and is the basis for Cong’s performance at The Substation.
Olivier Cong is a Hong Kong-based contemporary composer. He performs mainly with piano viola voice synthesisers and notably eastern traditional instruments such as Sheng and Ruan. Cong has been working with varied forms of music with theatre contemporary dance and film work exploring the time and space through the body of movements and dialogues.
