The internet might have all the answers, but 月を見る夜 Moongazing asks whether it has the ones that actually matter.
Antipodes Theatre Company’s 月を見る夜 Moongazing lands at La Mama HQ from 4 February to 22 February. The production centres on an unexpected bond between two Japanese diaspora women from different generations, brought together by a chance meeting. As young protagonist Tsukiko grows closer to the older and kinder Chie, she discovers herself grappling with even more questions than when she started.
Penned by Maki Morita and helmed by director Ari Angkasa, 月を見る夜 Moongazing weaves together Noh theatre influences, traditional Japanese storytelling and the complexities of our digital world. The piece explores inherited narratives and the sorrow of watching familial and cultural bonds dissolve in an ever-more fragmented society. It’s a meditation on where we turn for guidance when traditional systems feel out of reach.
