West Gate Tunnel crews are putting finishing touches on the project ahead of opening by the end of 2025.

A major infrastructure milestone in Victoria’s Big Build as Melbourne’s long-awaited West Gate Tunnel project enters its final construction phase, with crews completing asphalting and ventilation work before the tunnel opens by the end of 2025.

However, motorists face significant disruptions this weekend as essential finishing works require major lane closures and a complete overnight shutdown of the West Gate Freeway’s outbound lanes between Williamstown Road and Millers Road.

Asphalting works around the outbound West Gate Tunnel exit between Williamstown Road and Millers Road have been progressing steadily over recent months. West Gate Tunnel teams have also completed cladding on the southern westbound tunnel exit ventilation structure and finished barrier, kerb, and drainage works around the Williamstown Road westbound entry ramp.

Crews will now shift focus to the express lanes between Williamstown Road and Millers Road to complete final asphalting and line marking work before the West Gate Tunnel opens.

West Gate Tunnel works

  • 12-14 September: West Gate Freeway outbound reduced to two lanes between Williamstown and Millers Roads
  • 12-14 September: Williamstown Road outbound entry ramp closed
  • 14 September: One inbound lane closed between Williamstown and Millers Road
  • 14-15 September overnight: Complete closure of West Gate Freeway outbound between Williamstown and Millers Roads

Major lane and ramp closures as part of the West Gate Tunnel works are scheduled from 11.59pm Friday 12 September to 10.30pm Sunday 14 September. During this period, the West Gate Freeway outbound will operate with just two lanes between Williamstown and Millers Roads, while the Williamstown Road outbound entry ramp will be completely closed.

Additional disruption comes Sunday when one lane will close on the inbound West Gate Freeway between Williamstown and Millers Road. Complete overnight closure of the outbound freeway between these points runs from 10.30pm Sunday 14 September to 5am Monday 15 September.

Motorists should expect delays of up to 30 minutes and consider avoiding the West Gate Bridge entirely by seeking alternative routes. Project organisers recommend checking detour information for the West Gate Tunnel before travelling during the closure periods.
