Fully Submerged In Techno: This DJ Has Nothing To Lose
There is no doubt about it; Techno is experiencing a massive renaissance at the moment. As a genre, it has always been accused of being purist, too cool for its own good, unapproachable or not for everyone. But spend an hour listening to Virgil Enzinger and you begin to understand how profoundly good the combination of early Detroit, modern minimal and futuristic evil sounds are, when gelled into a superb, congruent whole.
In Virgil’s own words, his output is dependant on a current feeling – yet all his productions are influenced by his dark style. He explains, “There can never be just one direction; I am open for all and everything. My spirit will guide me to whatever style is necessary and my inner talent will help me to achieve whatever results are required. This is putting the world, for myself into perspective, the world gets a higher meaning through achieving the style and the essence of all, of the world, of life and of music. This is only happening in a few moments in my life and it is not at will. It will come and go on it’s own.”
Indeed, if I’m reading correctly, creating music for the Austrian is almost a religious experience.
“If for instance I have finished creating a new track, the feeling is almost gone. But after a short break this feeling will arise inside me and push me to continue and to go on and on. It is not dependent on any particular set of production equipment. If you are the one, you will get there. Even with the most basic equipment you can achieve the most outstanding results. And I can be inspired by anything. I can draw a major part of my inspiration from travelling and performing in diverse countries worldwide. Meeting up with the local crowd and uniting many by my music and performances certainly is the best inspiration I can think of.”
Another bit of essential trivia is that Virgil is a live performer. Seemingly able to manipulate any number of samples, tracks and edits on the fly, there is no such thing as a standard performance – every gig is different. He continues, “The intriguing thing about playing live is that you are free to manipulate your set and that the musical output is not predefined. This is especially true when playing together with someone, like I did for instance at Nature One with Submerge. Also at the gigs in Australia it will be a similar experience together with Industrialyzer. Two artists can put the music live into a new shape and the crowd will appreciate that effort.”
Studio wise, Virgil is also keeping busy.
“I started my own label I.CNTRL in April this year. The label will feature some of the most reputable names in the electronic Music Industry. So far, it is digital only and we have reached release number four. The releases feature remixes of my own tracks by Sven Wittekind, A.Paul, Mike Humphries, Roman Zawodny, Sutter Cane and many more to come. I am planning to release artist EPs as well on I.CNTRL, for instance we have Ade Fenton coming up in October.” Look out for insanely impressive material shortly from Submerge and Xavier Morel also.
Finally – and lets cut to the chase – this show will be the finest ensemble of techno legends that Australia has seen for some time. Not only is the local talent smashing, but having two of the hottest names in electronic music present – playing live no less – is a very special treat. Virgil provides his final thoughts, “The tour will be my first visit to Australia and I am really, really excited about performing there! Be prepared for a massive and yet unheard dark techno experience!” Don’t miss these guys – they are on top of their game right now.
