The reason given was that the heritage expert to give evidence was going on holidays.
In the meantime, site owner Jinshan Investments has submitted yet a new plan. It will see the facade of the 103-year-old building retained above the ground floor but the rest of it demolished to build a 12-storey hotel (down from the original 33-storey hotel idea).
The Save The Palace Theatre group remarked on its Facebook page: “Whilst mildly frustrating this postponement allows all parties time to consider the amended plans and prepare submissions. The revised plans seek to take advantage of the increase in mandatory height limits and retain a portion of the facade only.
“What the developer is failing to understand still is the cultural significance of this building as an entertainment venue and the importance to the people of this state. The Palace Theatre is a three dimensional building, not a movie set.”
Melbourne City Council has not decided if it will remain opposed to the developer as it needs to study the new design. But heritage and community groups remain furious and see the latest design as a token gesture to heritage protection.
Meantime, the VCAT has ruled that Richmond’s Old Greek Theatre on Bridge Road can be demolished to make way for a 13-storey residential and retail development, despite Yarra Council and community opposition
