This straightforward, "run-through-a-wall" synth-punk track tells the story of alien bounty hunters battling across the cosmos
Unscored’s new single Bounty Hunting Scumbag Alien Punk is undoubtedly firing on all cylinders – simply listen to the chorus of the track and you’ll get what I mean.
Harrison Lane’s shouted chants of “Bullets” fire off in the chorus in sets of six, each word slung at the listener like a six-shooter gun emptying its cartridge. Backing the powerful vocal chants are soaring guitar lines, courteous of Daniel Larosa’s expertise, which snake their way in and around Lane’s blistering rhythm guitar passages.

Isaac Anderson’s relentless drumming blasts throughout the whole track, with pummelling crash accents on every downbeat and exploding double kicks that feel like volleys of heavy machine-gun fire. Rounding out the mix, Carter Smith’s driving bass coalesces with the rest of the instrumentals, and the end product is this high-octane track that’ll leave you breathless.
What Unscored’s new single really nails though, is capturing the ethos of DIY punk, while still retaining a quality-sounding mix. Lane’s vocals are harsh and heavy, but it doesn’t detract from the clarity of his words. The low-end isn’t sacrificed either, as Smith’s bass can be easily heard – and felt – throughout the track. Lane’s ingenuity also shines in the subtle incorporation of synths that drone in the verses, padding out the mix and creating tension.
The album art depicts the titular Bounty Hunting Scumbag Alien Punk perfectly. The psychedelic illustration looks like a bad trip put on paper – the alien’s jaunty, cigarette-stained teeth and psychotic eyes encapsulate this character in sublime fashion. With the art done in-house by the drummer Anderson, it’s hard not to appreciate the band’s undeniable raw talent.
Emerging from the northern suburbs of Melbourne with a debut album last year, Unscored are certainly establishing themselves, playing with well-known local favourites such as Dole Manchild and Daddy Issues.
