Librarian by day and pop-folk singer-songwriter by night, Toby Mobbs has released his debut album 'Placid in the Rough'.

Gearing up for a national tour in October, the singer-songwriter from Albury has carved a unique music style both live and in the studio by incorporating thick, dynamic, and rhythmic guitar, warm vocals, and introspective lyrical storytelling. He’s bringing a stripped back version of his debut album on the road, supported by local acts, many of whom feature on his album. He’ll be performing in Melbourne on October 28 at the Brunswick Artists’ Bar.

Released this year, Placid in the Rough is the debut album of the indie-pop singer and songwriter. Toby Mobbs’ dreamy vocals with a pop-punk edge invites the listener on a cinematic and anecdotal journey. Equal parts wistful and uplifting, the opening track Making Lemonade sets the reflective tone of the album, with its stripped back guitar riffs and honest lyricism.

Toby Mobbs’ various and eclectic influences are evident throughout the album – from the stripped-back nostalgia of Just One Thing to the country wail of The River to the violins of The Story so Far.

“I believe I have a story that people will care about,” Toby Mobbs said. “After seeing so many bands and artists promote national tours that skipped Darwin, Perth, Hobart, or even all three, I was determined to book a tour that didn’t skip any capital city.

I have also included a show where I was born (Wagga Wagga) and a show where I currently live. Effectively I’ll be travelling from Wagga to Albury the long way around, by car, some 14,000km over 28 days. I’ll be supported by local artists at every show, many of which feature on my debut album.”

Toby Mobbs’ debut album Placid In The Rough brings together 8 tracks released individually over the span of two years. It follows the easing of the worldwide pandemic through the slow transition from home recording to studio with an increasingly growing group of collaborators as physical distancing restrictions began to ease. While bringing together a multitude of Mobbs’ musical inspirations from hard rock, to folk, to pop, to orchestral – this has emerged one of the most diverse collections of genres released by an independent artist, tied together by introspective lyrics and melody at its heart.

In 2020 Mobbs announced his ‘Making Lemonade’ Regional Tour consisting of thirty-nine shows across regional New South Wales and Victoria. The tour promoted his debut single by the same name which took out the #1 spot on the Atomic music charts for an unprecedented 15 consecutive weeks, gaining the first ‘Triple Uranium’ award. In 2021 Mobbs’ follow-up track ‘Moments’ shot up the Triple J Unearthed Chart gaining the #1 spot for Rock and #2 overall. Other charting accolades include reaching #3 on AMRAP’s national weekly regional charts with ‘Just One Thing’ in 2021.
