Spanning over 65,000 hectares in Victoria’s central west.
Victoria is getting three new national parks spanning more than 65,000 hectares in Victoria’s central west, with the state government moving to preserve the unique environments of three fertile regions.
In order to do so, the Victorian government will look to link up existing state forests, parks and reserves. The largest of which will see Lerderderg State Forest connected with the Wombat State Forest, creating a new national park of than 44,000 hectares between Daylesford and Bacchus Marsh.

Northwest of Avoca, a 15,000-hectare Pyrenees National Park is set to be created, while another new 5,282-hectare national park will double the size of the existing state park north of Buangor, creating the Mount Buangor National Park.
Alongside the three national parks, the state government has also announced 5,246 hectares of new conservation parks to protect flora and fauna in regions where there’s high biodiversity value. Regional parks across Victoria will also be enlarged by 27,735 hectares, while existing nature and bushland reserves will be expanded by a further 7,560 hectares.
It comes as the Victorian government tries to protect habitat for rare and endangered species in the state’s forests, parks and reserves. It’s also part of an effort to sustain Victoria as a drawcard for tourism and recreation.
