Presented as part of PHOTO 2022, a Melbourne wide photography biennale, the Centre for Contemporary Photography is presenting three concurrent exhibitions by LGBTQI+ artists.

The Centre for Contemporary Photography has three great exhibitions running concurrently, all responding to PHOTO 2022’s theme of ‘Being Human’. Showcasing how the queer community celebrates its voice and experiences throughout history, Queering the Frame: Community, Time, Photography, Internet Immigrant and Paul Mpagi Sepuya seek to flip heteronormative narratives.

One of the exhibitions running in the following months is Queering the Frame: Community, Time, Photography, an exhibition that explores photographs from Australian artists across generations and questions how the narratives of queerness are told. Running alongside it is Internet Immigrant, the photographical work of American photographer and performance artist Martine Gutierrez that satirically explores deep rooted biases in our culture. Joining the line-up, Paul Mpagi Sepuya presents an artist who positions queerness and Blackness at the heart of his photography, whose exhibition at CCP includes elements from his studio such as mirrors, photography tools and backdrops.

It’s presented as part of PHOTO 2022, a Melbourne-wide photography biennale that’s set to honour 123 local and international artists across 90 venues. Its theme this year, ‘Being Human’, allows artists to unpack the human condition through the medium of photography and question who we are.

“These exhibitions respond beautifully to the PHOTO 2022 theme: Being Human and can be viewed alongside other PHOTO 2022 exhibitions in Fitzroy and Collingwood, and throughout Melbourne and regional Victoria, for audiences to build a picture of the contemporary human condition as interpreted by some of our leading artists and photographers,” said PHOTO 2022 Artistic Director, Elias Redstone.
