Three hours, 21 dancers, 21 years in the making: NEWRETRO takes over ACCA

NEWRETRO

The immersive dance experience is designed to feel both intimate and spectacular.

In the world of Australian contemporary dance, Lucy Guerin is an unstoppable force. An award-winning performer in her own right, Lucy established her own company in 2002 with the hope of pushing the boundaries of her art and reimagining what dance could be.

Lucy Geurin Inc’s work, NEWRETRO, does just that. From March 25 to April 2, the epic performance installation will take place at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) – performers will dance not just inside the building, but with it.

NEWRETRO is not your typical dance performance. There’s no assigned seating – instead, audience members are free to wander throughout the building, coming and going as they please. As the title suggests, the show fuses together elements of new, modern work with fragments of the company’s archival works, some performed by the original dancers themselves.

As a celebration of the company’s big 21st birthday, it was only fitting that they brought in 21 dancers for NEWRETRO. In an exploration of memory, ephemeral lineages and embodied knowledge, the dancers will perform in a symbiotic relationship with the audience and the architecture of their surroundings.

“The making of NEWRETRO has been exhilarating and occasionally confronting as the past meets the present. Having several generations of dancers in the same room at the same time is like a living archive, where the physical imprints of all the dancers I have worked with come together as a single body of work,” says director and choreographer Lucy Geurin.

“It’s thrilling to see the artistry and focus that this glorious cast brings into one space. The galleries at ACCA create a new frame for the audience to experience a constantly morphing structure of movement and the vast embodiment of knowledge that is at the core of my choreography.”

NEWRETRO will run from March 25 to April 2. Tickets for NEWRETRO are on sale now. To grab yours or find out more, head here
