Brunswick's transformed Sydney Road green space recognised at Australian Institute of Landscape Architects Festival.

Michelle Guglielmo Park has taken out a major national gong for landscape architecture. Designed by Brunswick-based GLAS Landscape Architects, the Sydney Road park across from Brunswick Town Hall won the Climate Positive Award at the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects Festival of Landscape Architecture on 21 October.

GLAS Landscape Architects transformed a concrete car park into a thriving, biodiverse green space by integrating recycled and locally sourced materials including bluestone boulders and wharf timber with native plant species. Michelle Guglielmo Park was recognised alongside 35 other projects spanning 17 categories at the ceremony held in Hobart.

National Jury Chair Kate Luckraft praised winning designers for forging vital new collaborations between landscape architects, communities and academics while demonstrating the profession’s commitment to climate-positive design. Projects enriched by First Nations collaboration and interdisciplinary thinking exemplify how landscape architects are shaping resilient, climate-conscious places that reflect a deeper understanding of Country and community.

GLAS Landscape Architects also won the Tiny Patches Award for an experimental project involving shopping trolleys converted into mobile habitats using soil and vegetation from Moonee Ponds Creek and Clifton Park in Brunswick. Based in Duckett Street, GLAS previously designed the revamped forecourt of Jewell Station in 2021.

Michelle Guglielmo Park’s transformation showcases how urban spaces can be reimagined to prioritise biodiversity and sustainability. Brunswick locals now have a prime example of climate-positive design right on Sydney Road.
