The Melbourne rapper is breaking into the music scene with his first record, Bucket List.
At 44 years of age, Brenton Otte isn’t your typical hip hop artist. Today releasing his debut LP under the moniker This Old Man, he aims to fuse the storytelling prowess of Paul Kelly with ’90s-style hip hop beats.
Titled Bucket List, the album has been three years in the making, finally coming to fruition in lockdown.
Recorded in his shed, the record served as a creative outlet for Otte in between his duties as a dad and his nine-to-five corporate job amidst the pandemic. Not only did Bucket List act as somewhere for This Old Man to put his lockdown frustrations, but he also wanted to create something ultimately uplifting after a universally tough year.
Comprising ten tracks, the album explores everything from fatherhood to politics and mental health, pitting old school style beats against deep lyrics.
From imagining a future where Pauline Hanson is Australia’s Prime Minister in the scorching diss track ‘Imagine That’ to tapping into the energy of his six-year-old daughter on ‘Clarity’, Bucket List is a mixed bag that sees This Old Man rapping about “shit that’s important to him”.
Otte plans to launch the album with a virtual gig before making his live debut on stage in 2021.
