No Typewriters / No Talking is bringing its silent writing sessions back for December at Tempo Rubato in Brunswick.
Writers of any stage, genre, format or style are invited to come work together for one hour in shared sustained silence. No Typewriters / No Talking sessions are held across Melbourne, with this month’s event hosted in conjunction with what organisers dote the best classical music venue in Brunswick.
According to the organisers, you can write with anything: biro on notepad, fingers on laptop, whatever works for you. Just not a bloody typewriter. During the hour of writing there is absolutely no talking. Coming together for one hour of shared sustained silence is designed to help you concentrate on the thing you want to do but find many reasons not to: write.

Doors open at 6pm and the bar at Tempo will be slinging drinks. Once you move into the writing space there is no talking. Silent writing starts at 6:30pm and the doors will be locked from 6:45pm, so don’t be late or you’ll miss out.
Three types of tickets are available: Golden Ticket gets you a seat, Drunken Ticket gets you a seat plus a drink (any beer, wine or non-alcoholic option), and Student/First Nations/Concession gets you a seat if you fall into one of those categories.
Look, the rules are simple and they’re in the name. No typewriters because, according to the organisers, no one wants to hear your pompous clack clack clacking. No talking because if you want to talk, there are plenty of other places you can talk. You can talk any time before or after the session.
What happens if you bring a typewriter? It might get defenestrated. What happens if you talk? You’ll be politely asked to shut up. Keep talking? You’ll be impolitely asked to shut up and potentially defenestrated.
Once you’re inside, you’ll get a table to rest your writing implements on, a chair to rest yourself on, water and various receptacles to hold said water, and a prompt if you don’t have anything you’re currently working on.
Organisers say it’s perfectly fine to come in, sit down, start writing, realise what you’re writing is complete cactus, push through, write some more, think to yourself “actually, that’s pretty okay”, look up, realise there’s only five more minutes of silent writing time left, scribble a few cursory notes to yourself, and then leave. All without saying a peep.
Once the hour of writing is over, you can stay for a drink at Tempo to chat. No Typewriters / No Talking aims to run these sessions monthly, and everyone is welcome.
