Families with kids under 18 can now grab Youth myki cards online for free Melbourne public transport starting next month.

Youth myki cards are now available to purchase online through the Transport Victoria website, delivering free Melbourne public transport and statewide travel to more than one million young Victorians from the start of next year.

Physical cards will also be available at staffed stations from Saturday 27 December.

Youth myki was announced as part of the Victorian Budget 2025/26 to take pressure off families dealing with everyday costs. A yearly student pass currently costs $755, meaning a family with three children under 18 will save $2,265 annually once the free travel on Melbourne public transport kicks in.

Cards feature a striking design created by 11-year-old Victorian student Charlie, capturing all the ways young people will use their Youth myki for free travel next year. All Victorians under 18 are eligible no matter where they live, with the card number able to be used for booked V/Line services and as a flash pass on non-myki regional buses.

From 1 January 2026, more than 650,000 seniors and close to 300,000 carers and disability support pensioners will also catch trains, trams and buses for free on weekends. Passengers must carry proof of concession and continue tapping on and off as usual, but won’t be charged on weekends.

Families already have access to free public transport across Victoria every weekend until 1 February 2026 to celebrate the opening of the Metro Tunnel and thank Victorians for their patience during construction.

Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams says the Victorian government is helping families save on everyday costs, whether cheaper school runs or weekend trips to the footy, giving families one less thing to worry about.
