This Aussie festival happens in one of the most beautiful locations on earth

Dragon Dreaming festival
Words by Staff Writer

Have you ever heard of Dragon Dreaming Festival? It's a bit like Rainbow Serpent or Esoteric, but it happens in one of the most stunningly picturesque locations you'll ever see.

Welcome to Lake Burrinjuck in Wee Jasper, the jewel of New South Wales’ Yass region and the traditional country of the Wiradjuri people.

For four days in October this year, Wee Jasper will become the temporary home to a community of like-minded ravers, who create one of the most special festivals on the Australian calendar (and that’s really saying something).

Dragon Dreaming Festival 2024

  • 4 – 7 October 2024
  • Lake Burrinjuck, NSW

Keep up with the latest music news, features, festivals, interviews and reviews here.

Dragon Dreaming offer “an annual opportunity to escape the daily grind” while punters immerse themselves in four days of music, performance, arts, installations, and lifestyle workshops across three main music stages and a plethora of other activities on offer.

This festival also promises a focus on sustainability and attention to detail, which we imagine was crucial in securing the support of The Wee Jasper community and landowners, who all support the event’s goals and intentions, with fully approved land use permissions. They tick a lot of boxes in this regard: the festival is powered through sustainably sourced biodiesel power, all plastics, metal paper and glass are recycled. All food waste is composted on site with the compost later used for the revegetation area. They’re also a REGEN Festival, part of a group that has planted over 73,000 trees (tree planting workshops occur each year at the festival).

It’s easy to see why environmentally sustainability is such a focus for them. The festival is held on the shore of Lake Burrinjuck and, like Strawberry Fields, the waters are usually the perfect temperature for swimming. There’ll be lifeguards stationed at the water’s edge during daylight hours.

Dragon Dreaming’s 2024 lineup

While location, location, location may be the catch-call for many – and let’s be honest, you’d probably pay a pretty penny just to camp by that lake for a few days – festivals undoubtedly live and die by the quality of their music. Like Eso, Dragon Dreaming go big every year, with a mammoth lineup spanning a wide range of electronic sub-genres. Just take a look at the scale on offer…

There’s a mix of veterans and emerging exciting newcomers every year (they have a superb hatchling program to help uncover new artists, which is a highlight every year). Those in the know will be well-aquainted with the likes of Merkaba, Doppel, Mogwai (the psych project, not the Scottish rockers) and Brittany De Marco, just to name a few.

Limited online festival passes are available for Dragon Dreaming 2024, needless to say, we expect them to sell out. Find out more here.
