FREEDANCE is throwing a free open-air day party at Edgar's Creek Parkland in Coburg this Labour Day.
The 18th edition of FREEDANCE takes over a Coburg stretch of the Merri Creek trail on 9 March, running from 2pm to 4pm with music from Pauli Dancer. The afternoon session blends freestyle movement with a wildly eclectic soundtrack — think techno one moment, jazz the next, then gospel, psytrance, hip hop, funk, disco, blues, ambient and classical all woven into the same set. It’s one of several free events landing across Melbourne over the long weekend, and one of the more left-field options going.
The musical range is the drawcard. Pauli Dancer builds each session around the idea that diverse music pulls out diverse movement, so the selection jumps from Elvis to Aphex Twin, from new age to something self-described as daggy-as-fuck, all without losing a thread. It’s less structured than a traditional outdoor set and more like a freeform journey designed to make people move however they feel like moving.

The afternoon kicks off at 2pm with a welcome and Acknowledgement of Country before the warm-up eases into the main session from 2:30. The core block runs through to 3:45, followed by a wind-down sharing circle. Afterwards, there’s an open invitation to hang around for a picnic — Coburg’s green spaces have become a go-to for outdoor community gatherings, and Edgar’s Creek Parkland along the Merri Creek trail is a solid spot to settle in for the afternoon.
No tickets, no experience, no expectations
FREEDANCE positions itself as an open, inclusive space with no barriers to entry — no tickets, no experience required, no expectations about how anyone should move. It runs as a conscious dance practice at heart, encouraging attendees to connect with nature and community through movement, stillness and breathing. The vibe sits somewhere between a meditative session and an outdoor party, depending entirely on where the music takes things at any given moment.
This pocket of Melbourne’s north has become increasingly active as a community-driven creative hub, with grassroots events continuing to surface across Merri-bek. FREEDANCE fits right into that fabric — no sponsors, no ticketing, just people showing up and moving.
The event lands on the same day as the Moomba Parade, so if you’d rather spend your public holiday on the grass by the creek than navigating CBD crowds, this is the move. FREEDANCE takes place on the land of the Wurundjeri-Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, and each session opens with a formal acknowledgement. Just show up and bring a picnic — everything else is taken care of.
