There are four new solo exhibitions opening next week at NGV

Artists Del Kathryn Barton, Louise Paramor, Mel O’Callaghan and Helen Maudsley are opening free exhibitions. Each of the artists still practice to date, so there’ll be plenty of new work on display.

Louise Paramor is a contemporary sculptor. She’ll be displaying over 100 vibrant paper and plastic works that range in size from just 20 centimetres to 3 metres, in Palace of the Republic. She developed her paper technique in Berlin during the 1990s, which involves hand cutting and gluing layers of paper before unfolding them into 3D shapes.

Two time Archibald prize-winner Del Kathryn Barton will show her largest collection to date in The Highway is a Disco. It encompasses 150 recent works, including her well-known, intricate portraits. There is also a new sculpture inspired by her mother, and a screening of her short film RED, which stars Cate Blanchett.

Mel O’Callaghan will show her Australian premiere of the video, Ensemble. It was last showed at the Centre Pompidou, in Paris and Malaga. The 10 metre wide silent film depicts resistance against violence, through the portrayal of one man fighting a forceful jet of water across two screens.

Helen Maudsley, at age 90, has many years of experience. She often uses cubist elements, allowing the viewer to extract their own meaning from the abstract patterns and shapes in her work. Her collection, Our Knowing and Not Knowing, will showcase 30 new drawings and paintings.
