From the age of 17, John McEnroe’s on and off court appearances became immortalised in biographies, interview footage, Youtube compilations and 1980s fandom. In I Heart John McEnroe, Uninvited Guests attempts to assemble a truth about the man, unpacking the complex myth behind the athlete while wrestling with the ideas of competition, presentation and narrative while sharing their own stories of embarrassment and anger.
Presented on a tennis court, the show is constructed from McEnroe quotes, David Foster Wallace’s writings on tennis, interviews about acting with Orson Welles and transcripts of Youtube clips of irate celebrities including Christian Bale to create a unique nightly performance that is part choreography, part script and part improvisational bullying.
