Theatre Works’ Big Lost Band returns in 2022

Big Lost Band

Theatre Works is bringing back its Big Lost Band to St Kilda in January 2022, with an open invitation to musicians of all ages and skill levels.

The idea behind Big Lost Band is to get as many musicians as possible, with no limitations on skill or age, together in one place to play simultaneously, creating a cacophony of sound amid an impressive visual and audio display.

The Big Lost Band debuted in 2019 as part of the Lost Lands Festival and now it’s back in 2022, taking place at the O’Donnell Gardens, St Kilda on January 15, with the first fully open rehearsal scheduled from 1-3pm on Saturday December 12 at Theatre Works.

What you need to know

  • The Big Lost Band is a huge simultaneous live music program open to anyone
  • It’s organisers, Theatre Works, are looking for 75 musicians of all ages and skill levels

The last Big Lost Band had a 136-strong band, comprising 70% children and young people, playing 20 drum kits, 40 guitars, 10 basses and assorted whistles, saxes, keyboards, buckets and coconuts, in addition to a huge choir to bring the spectacle together.

This year, the organisers are looking for 75 mostly young people, although the invite is open to grandchildren and grandparents and everyone in between, who’ll manage two week-long visits to rehearse the songlist.

On January 14, the whole Big Lost Band will congregate at the gardens for one final massive rehearsal, and then it’s live with the show the next day.
