South African Film Festival

The South African Film Festival returns to the Ritz for Classic Cinemas this May 4 -11.

The festival is a not-for-profit event organised by passionate volunteers to celebrate the diversity, complexity and creativity of contemporary South African cinema and identity. The net proceeds from the festival support Education without Borders (EwB), which provides educational opportunities for disadvantaged young people in South Africa.

Music Is My Life

  • Thu 4 May, 6pm

A must-see documentary about Joseph Shabalala and his internationally recognised group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, which put South African music on the world stage. The film charts Shabalala’s rise from humble farm origins to international stardom following his collaboration with Paul Simon on the Graceland album.

The Honeymoon

  • Fri 5 May, 6.30pm

THE HONEYMOON is an uplifting and hilarious romantic comedy. When Katia’s fiancé casually dumps her on the eve of their wedding, a new world of adventure and emotional insight opens for her. She and her two unlikely friends agree to go ahead with the planned honeymoon to the exotic destination of Zanzibar.

Mission: Joy

  • Sun 7 May, 6pm

An exploration of the remarkable friendship between Archbishop Desmond Tutu and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. These self-described mischievous brothers give a master class in how to create joy in a world that was never easy for them. From Academy Award-winning director Louie Psihoyos and co-director Peggy Callahan.

Mutant

  • Tue 9 May, 6.30pm

This documentary paints an intimate portrait of one of South Africa’s most outspoken and controversial artists and the turbulent world he lives in. We follow Isaac Mutant’s story, shaped by his proximity to both gang culture and Hip-Hop within the context of the Cape Coloured community.

The Fragile King

  • Thu 11 May, 6.30pm

Michael, a 15-year-old schoolboy, is sent to live with his estranged grandfather following his mother’s death. Slowly a relationship builds during a road trip, only to lose each other. Or do they?
