In connection with the ground’s heritage and aesthetic inimitability, the new program comprising installations and performances encourages visitors to engage with the artists and their work.
Kicking off the program is the artistic sister duo of Claire and Jasmine Robertson with their work Above and Below. Slide into the mood with their meditation exercise – to be filmed by a drone, eventually facilitating a short film which will be screened at the Convent.
Other works include Katie Lee’s Cross-Section which explores the Convent as a Town Square involving roving performances and video installations. PLAYSpace by Playable Streets invites children and adults alike to create their own musical composition with the brush of the hand over plants and walls.
Coming to the fourth week of May will be Sonic Alchemy by artist Juliana España Keller. Drawing on the Convent’s history as a working monastic site, this artwork invites volunteers to join a week-long residency, learning performative improvisation, sound exploration and the practice of deep listening.
The Light and the Ground is the brainchild of artist Joanna Buckley – a semi-permanent work covering the Convent’s Providence building in gold patina. This will transform the spectacle of the Abbotsford Convent from Wednesday May 17.
All works were proudly commissioned by the Abbotsford Convent Foundation with The Light and the Ground also receiving assistance from the Australian Government through the Australian Council for the Arts.
