The Moniters : Sex City Lovers

This Brisbane-based three-piece have something pretty different going on. There’s somewhat of an electronic vibe going on, but the overriding feel is catchy, occasionally driving alternative pop-rock. Touches of other bands can be detected in their sound, such as the Killers, MM9 and maybe someone like the Presets, but no one influence dominates. So the finished product is quite original overall though the songs are mostly short, inoffensive and broad in their appeal. That is, until you hit The Filth Beneath her Fingernails, which, while based on the most simplistic imaginable chord sequence and groove, is a very interesting and experimental electronic piece that builds very nicely over its four and a half minute length. They then close proceedings with the eminently danceable title track. Elsewhere, Losing Heart is darker, mellower but has a subtle, brooding power to it and a great chorus.

Amid the complex and intricate music that abounds in today’s rock, alternative and metal scenes, it’s sometimes refreshing to take a breather from all that and appreciate a band who values the beauty in the simplicity. And these guys are doing that very nicely indeed.
