The Laurels are a psych rock outfit from Sydney and Black Cathedral is the opening track on their Mesozoic EP. This warped, grinding, bluesy tune has all the hallmarks of the stoner come wall-of-guitar sound – a churning rhythm, spacious, climbing riffs and a hypnotic melody, all brooding storminess and agitation. If it doesn’t advance the genre much, it at least demonstrates how good it can be.
