The Jamaican Music and Food Festival was founded in 2016 by DJ Stick Mareebo with the simple objective of bringing a slice of Jamaican culture to Melbourne. However, over the years, the festival has evolved to represent so much more. The festival pays homage to Australia’s eclectic cultural tapestry and the many rich contributions that global migration facilitates. It celebrates the achievements of diverse communities in Australia, including Indigenous, Pan-African, South American, Pacific Islander, Caribbean and European peoples. With Australia being one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse populations in the world, the meaning of the festival is clear – to provide a space where “our people can come together to show their true colours and celebrate with flags and carnival spirit”.
The heart of the Jamaican Music and Food Festival is, undoubtedly, the music. Playing across four stages, the festival boasts a stellar line-up of international and local talent.
UK British Jungle and DJ sensation General Levy will be taking the stage.
Levy grew up surrounded by reggae music and black culture. At just 14 years old, he formed his first sound system. A sound system is a fundamental and iconic element of the island’s musical heritage that typically consists of a group of audio equipment, including amplifiers, speakers, and turntables, used to play reggae, dancehall, and other music styles. By bringing his music to global audiences, Levy promotes a Caribbean sound which he believes belongs to everyone.
Pioneer of the UK Hip Hop scene Spikey Tee is another must-see on the day. Spikey Tee has been working with the reggae sound system for most of his life. His energetic stage presence and DJing, MCing and singing skills have seen him grow a global fan base and complete countless successful international tours.
Fitzroy Lee is also set to play. Born in Jamaica, Fitzroy established himself in the reggae music scene in the 90s in West Negril Jamaica – where he Mc’ed on the Ghetto Rock sound system. Fitzroy now hosts Reggae Mixtape – a radio show that promotes reggae music and culture.
There will also be unmissable performances from the likes of DJ Defstar (UK), Flames Eye (JA), Jesse I, Sista Itations, Mohair Slim, Housewife’s Choice, Rick Howe and 3 heavy weights Sound Systems, and much more fun for the whole family.
Beyond the music, the festival embraces Jamaican culinary delights. The enticing aroma of Jamaican dishes will beckon attendees to indulge in the flavours of the Caribbean. Jamaican food stands out for its matchless blend of bold spices and seasonings, such as Scotch bonnet peppers and allspice, which give dishes a distinctive flavour. The traditional method of jerk cooking, with its smoky and spicy attributes, is a hallmark of Jamaican cuisine – and something to look out for on the day. Every bite is a taste of the island’s heritage, merging local ingredients and traditional recipes passed down through generations.
Keep the good vibes going at the end of the night with the JMFF After Party hosted by I Love Dancehall. Head to Kindred Bandroom at 10 pm to see the likes of Burn City Queenz, Chubby Dice, Defstar (UK), DJ Dazz and plenty of other incredible talent.
The Jamaican Music and Food Festival stands as a symbol of unity, celebrating the beauty of diversity and showcasing the incredible power of music and cuisine to bring people together. It’s a day where One Love truly comes to life, transcending barriers and creating lasting memories for everyone who attends. So, get ready to immerse yourself in the rhythm and flavours of Jamaica, as this festival promises an unforgettable day of celebration, connection, and sheer enjoyment.
