The global movement also looks to bring a little light to those self-isolating.
After having 17 of their shows cancelled in just two days, The Cat Empire have launched an initiative dubbed ‘Lockdown Get Down’, a movement aimed at supporting musicians across the globe during the coronavirus crisis.
With many music-lovers around the world confined to their homes, The Cat Empire have a simple request: stream more music.
Their Lockdown Get Down movement suggests that people upgrade to paid streaming subscriptions where possible, stream music whenever they can and create a playlist titled ‘Lockdown Get Down’ and share it.
They’ve also asked people to take photos and videos of themselves getting down at home and share them on social media with the hashtags #thecatempire and #lockdowngetdown, so the band can see everyone rocking out and hopefully, create the sense of one big party.
“Our industry is under serious global threat as gatherings in public spaces are not allowed to continue,” said The Cat Empire Manager Correne Wilkie. “There are no bail out packages for musicians, or songwriters, sculptors, photographers, creators… And yet, we desperately need the beauty of artists reflected in the world so we can find our way through the dark times.”
Not only will more streaming mean more money for artists, music has been proven to reduce stress, which is something we all need during these uncertain times.

Our industry, like many, is under serious global threat as gatherings in public spaces are cancelled. We have experienced this first-hand with 17 imminent shows cancelled, bringing us to our knees financially. There is no bailout package for musicians and songwriters and yet, we all desperately need their beauty reflected in the world so we can find our way through dark times. This problem is much bigger than us, and we fully acknowledge there are musicians who will be worse off than we are, which is why we have come up with an idea to help musicians globally, which we hope you will get behind, and share with the world. This is one way you can help musicians without spending more money than you already do, and without even leaving your homes (which is convenient right now). Our request is simple: STREAM MORE MUSIC to HELP MUSICIANS GLOBALLY. 1. Play your favourite artists non-stop on your preferred streaming service 2. Consider moving to a paid streaming subscription if that is manageable for you 3. Create a playlist; name it lockdowngetdown, and share it with your friends 4. Post your Lockdown Get Down photos and videos with hashtags #lockdowngetdown and #thecatempire so we can see you all rocking out at home. #LockdownGetdown #ilostmygigau #supportact #thecatempire #flattenthecurve
