Don’t break me.

With the finale due to hit our screens in May, this year’s Eurovision Song Contest has been cancelled due to coronavirus.

The contest has been held yearly since it began in 1956, drawing millions of viewers and a live audience of tens of thousands. This year’s finale was set to take place in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

“It is with great regret that we have to announce the cancellation of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam,” said Jon Ola Sand, the executive supervisor of the event.

“We regret this situation very much, but I can promise you: the Eurovision Song Contest will come back stronger than ever.”

Due to the continued spread of coronavirus across Europe and the resulting restrictions being enforced by governments, it was not possible to host this year’s event as planned. While an alternative digital event was explored, the organisation felt this would not honour the true tradition of Eurovision.

With uncertainty surrounding how long travel bans, lockdowns and other restrictions will need to remain in place, postponing this year’s event was also ruled out.

The Eurovision Song Contest will return in 2021.
