We're truly getting back into the swing of things across Melbourne theatre and comedy stages, with community theatre quality is as strong as it’s ever been, comedy theatres are back at full capacity, and everyone’s ready for a fun night out.

Today we’re having a look across the best upcoming Melbourne theatre and comedy events in December. We’re gazing our eye across Melbourne’s many stages to see what’s on the agenda this December. There’ll be something for everyone – musicals, plays, stand-up comedy, plus a whole lot more.

Full program launches are also coming thick and fast, with Theatre Works just announcing their schedule, while La Mama’s reopening festival celebrations are planning a huge array of events.

Check out Melbourne’s latest art exhibitions, stand-up comedy and theatrical events here.

My Brilliant Career

My Brilliant Career is one of Australia’s biggest exports, making a mark in book form back in 1901, movie form in 1979, and now you can see it hit the stage this December thanks to talented Aussie playwright Christine Davey, and production company Skin of our Teeth.

The show details Sybylla Melvyn’s path to womenhood, and everything that comes with it. It hits the beautiful La Mama Courthouse for a limited run, opening December 3 and closing December 5.

Nazeem Hussain

You’ve seen him on such Aussie comedy staples as Balls of Steel, Hughesy: We Have A Problem, and The Weekly, hilarious comedian Nazeem Hussain hits the stage next month.

He’s set to take the stage at fairly new venue Comedy Republic for a limited residency, trying out new material for his massive national tour in 2022, come and see a comedian work out his magic in real time.

Nazeem brings some much-needed laughs to Aussie fans for selected dates in December, and tickets are only $12, they can be booked here. There’s a heap of other awesome shows making their way to the Comedy Republic stage in coming weeks, check that out here.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical

There’s no doubt you’ve heard of this show hitting the stage in Melbourne in the last few weeks, Baz Luhrmann’s super popular film of the same name hits the now full capacity Regent Theatre stage throughout selected dates next month.

The musical is one of the best – hitting stages in Broadway and on the West End, and winning a whopping 10 Tony awards.

There’s still a heap of availability for shows throughout December, the show running every day besides Mondays and Christmas Day.

Geraldine Hickey

Perhaps known best for her work on 3RRR, Geraldine Hickey is slowly becoming one of our most prolific perfumers. A comedy festival staple, the comedienne has won a number of prestigious awards for her sets, often performed in her distinct hilarious deadpan.

She will hit the ornate old church venue Chapel Off Chapel with her ‘What A Surprise’ show from December 7 through to December 9. Check out some more info and grab tickets here.

Matador

After a bunch of sold out shows across Australia at various points throughout the last few years, Matador makes its return to the Athenaeum Theatre this December.

The show is promoted as a night of ‘dance, burlesque & circus”, which sounds like an intriguing mix and something we don’t often see on Melbourne’s stages.

You can also grab a pretty cool VIP ticket for this show – you get to enjoy the show from a VIP immersive balcony, for $400, you get start treatment, and are even provided with a complimentary bottle of champagne, making the night that extra bit special.

The show takes place from December 1 – 4. Grab tickets here. (The show is 18+, so leave the kids at home)

Candlelight Jazz: Best of Aretha Franklin

The music of Aretha Franklin is still living on half a decade after release, the late artist is still getting new fans each and every year. A talented jazz trio is bringing her music to life next month, turning the beautiful Meat Market theatre into a New York jazz club for the night.

All of her hits will be played – ‘I Say A Little Prayer’, ‘Think’, and ‘Respect’ just to name a few. The show’s going down on December 18 at 6:30pm and 8:30pm, grab tickets here.

Frozen: The Musical

Another popular show has recently made its way to Melbourne stages, based on the family movie of the same name.

The film was lauded for its amazing music – songs like ‘Do You Wanna Build a Snowman’, and ‘Let It Go’, composed by couple Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who returned to write music and lyrics for the stage show.

Tickets are not that expensive either – ranging from around $49 to extra premium $199 seats. The show hits the stunning Her Majesty’s Theatre throughout December, grab your tickets and check out some more info here.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

This isn’t a new show by any stretch, playing on and off since 2019. But this original show is on its way out, so December will be one of the last times you can catch it before it leaves in March.

The show’s is two parts; often seen one after the other, which can be quite a timely endeavour, so from early next year, the show’s re-tooling and becoming one part.

The play is a star studded affair, the play is littered with talented actors from shows like Underbelly, Home and Away and Winners and Losers, so be prepared to see a few people that look relatively familiar.

The show is currently playing at the Princess Theatre, check out show dates and book in tickets here.

Corner Comedy

Everyone’s favourite venue is back into the swing of things with some awesome music gigs, and some great comedy shows.

The massive show hits the stage on December 7, and features mammoth performers such as Nick Cody, who’s performed across the world and on shows like Conan.

It also features Alex Ward and Ivan Aristeguita, who have been seen on shows like Have You Been Paying Attention?, and newcomer Michael Shafar, who has been making waves for his hilarity in the comedy world.
