There’s also a wealth of incredible food on offer, with an abundance of restaurants, and of the course the South Melbourne Market – an iconic establishment that echoes the essence of the suburb.

In its geography, South Melbourne is adjacent to  its bayside sibling Port Melbourne. It acts as the meridian between the city and the culturally and creatively rich St Kilda. Yet South Melbourne  boasts its own vibrant arts scene, one that is musically bounteous.

So if you’re out for a day at the beach followed by a cocktail and some live music, or perhaps you’re in search of a mid-week jazz extravaganza, then South Melbourne is the suburb to be.

Established in 1853 and still running strong, the Golden Gate Hotel has a folkloric history, amplified by the regular musical offerings that they host. Every Thursday from 6:30pm there is jazz with the celebrated likes of Jackie Bornstein, and every Friday night from 4:30pm you can see a singer-songwriter perform. Happy hour coincides with an acoustic set on Friday, with $10 pints, $8 house wines and $8 spirits. Live music and happy drinks? It’s a no brainer.

Palace Hotel

The Palace has been a local favourite since the mid-1800s and its idiosyncratic charm resides in its love of sharing music. From 3-6pm on Sundays, the beer garden is flowing with local singer-songwriters. It’s worth the trip, and in line with their commitment to supporting music, there are grand hopes of expanding the musical program too. If you’re new to South Melbourne, a palatial experience that’s soundtracked by brilliant local musical talent awaits at Palace Hotel.

The Albion Rooftop and Club

This rooftop and club (Alumbra) is a party hub southside. Fridays and Saturdays feature live DJs running from 3pm until late. If you like heating up the dance floor, every Friday night sees The Albion transformed into a club celebrating the sensual and seductive sound of Latin Music. Oye Latino takes over the venue to showcase all that we have come to know and love of Latin sounds. Expect Reggaeton, Bachata, Salsa and more: this is the venue for you if you like to gyrate and gesticulate.
