Words by Benjamin Lamb

Melbourne galleries are throwing their doors open for an amazing array of Melbourne art exhibitions this month, so we've compiled some of the best.

There’s almost no question that Melbourne’s got some of the best artists in all creative fields, especially the fine arts, and some glorious international artists are showing this month as well in a whole range of Melbourne art exhibitions.

Today we’re looking through the latter, taking a journey through Melbourne’s galleries to see what’s out there this month.

Check out Melbourne’s latest art exhibitions, stand-up comedy and theatrical events here.

Gabrielle Chanel: Fashion Manifesto

This exhibition celebrates the amazing work of fashion designer Gabriel Chanel, (more commonly known as Coco Chanel. The exhibition will feature more than 100 certified garments from Chanel.

It’s been reported that Melbourne is the first city to get this exhibition after the fashion capital of Paris, it makes its way to the NGV after making a mark in Paris’s Palais Galleria.

Book it in here.

pond[er]

It’s more of an installation than an exhibition, but in the NGV’s sculpture garden, you’ll find this pretty cool looking pink pond.

It comes from the winner of the 2021 Architecture Commission, produced by architecture collective Taylor Knights. Best of all, this installation is a free thing you can head to – making it truly worth the journey.

Seeing the Invisible

This exhibition is a look into the future – it’s created with nothing but AR tech.

It’s taking place at the Royal Botanic Gardens, and you’ll find nothing there. You download an app upon arrival and look through that to see the installations among the trees and shrubs of the gardens.

It’s happening pretty much every day in December, and it’s free. Head down and check it out.

Disney: The Magic of Animation

If you’ve got kids who maybe aren’t massive fans of the art world, this exhibition will appeal to everyone.

The world of Disney has been delighting fans across the world for almost a century, and this exhibition celebrates the fun of it all. You’ll see original sketches and ideas behind some of your favourite characters.

It also has some Melbourne exclusives – featuring some sketches from latest Disney release Raya and The Last Dragon, being one of the first times they’re on display anywhere in the world.

Van Gogh

The talented artist’s greatest works are being re-imagined in a digital / immersive space, truly transporting you into the world he was creating with art.

This marks one of the first shows to hit Melbourne’s new digital art gallery The Lume, which is set to have many more amazing interactive and immersive experiences as time goes on.

Take a look at what to expect in the video below, and book in tickets here, there’s a heap of availability across most dates in December.

The New North Melbourne Museum of Modern Art

This exhibition is one of the newest on this list – bringing the best Indigenous artwork to the people of Melbourne.

It will feature the work of such talented artists as Ami Taib, Gary Bateman, Brian Birch, Melissa Nicholson, Wayne Bateman, and Michael Nicholson, who will also be presenting his favourite short films to the audience in attendance.

It’s on for a strictly limited season; December 2 through to December 12, and it’s free too!

Linden Postcard Show

This looks pretty cool – if you hate the mainstream art scene, than this is the choice for you.

Every year, the Linden Postcard show brings the art world into an 8 X 10 frame. Entrants are taken from all corners of Australia, the only condition is that the art must fit within the postcard size.

This exhibition showcases some of the best work from entrants, who are in line to win massive cash prizes. If you want to join in next year, keep an eye on Linden’s website here.

This will last until Feb 2022, but book in your visit next month here.
