Sydney Road is getting its first indie cinema in 44 years

Sydney Road
words by staff writer

Thornbury Picture House is opening a second venue on Sydney Road, Brunswick, bringing cinema back to the strip this November.

Brunswick Picture House on Sydney Road will have a similar vibe to Thornbury Picture House with a cosy bar, single-screen cinema and a curated program of what we’re sure will be interesting films.

Luckily for all you cinemaphiles, memberships will be valid across both venues once Brunswick Picture House opens.

Sydney Road in Brunswick has enjoyed a rich history of cinema life for over a hundred years but hasn’t had one since The Metropole, formerly known as The Padua, closed its doors in 1981. Brunswick Picture House continues that tradition and brings cinema back to the strip.

The family behind the Sydney Road build said reviving the beautiful heritage building has been a long and tough journey, but they’re excited to get back to what they love: “being an important arts venue in the heart of a diverse community”.

Brunswick Picture House plans to bring great films to a new area while also offering a space where filmmakers can have their work shown and local groups can engage the venue for fundraising activities.

The venue will also be a place where people can just hang out, meet up with friends and have a drink.

Thornbury Picture House isn’t going anywhere, with the team planning to build on what they’ve created in Thornbury Heights for Brunswick.

The Sydney Road venue opening and session times will be announced on socials and in their newsletter as November approaches.
